"I had to get used to it a little," Taylor said. "I just sat back and watched film, did things like that, took coaching and tried to get better every day."

Taylor's coaches and teammates say he's a better tailback than he was during the second half of last season, when he rushed for 462 yards and four touchdowns in the final six games.

"Very humble, just a hard working guy," Muschamp said. "He never said a whole lot. Kelvin's a team guy, Vans All Red Old Skool

GAINESVILLE Kelvin Taylor is back in his natural comfort zone: ball in his hands, rushing for yardage, a starting tailback once again.

"I think he's more confident in what he's doing," Muschamp said. "He's much better in protection than he was a year ago, where he needed to take some big steps. He's got natural running instincts."

"Once I got my chance, I knew it was going to be on and I was going to have a pretty good game. It wasn't really discouraging. I just was encouraging my teammates and being a team player. That was pretty much it."

It was a jarring dose of reality for an athlete who always had his hands on the ball and always had been the focal part of an offense.

"I wasn't really discouraged," he said. "I was just like, 'Wow, Mack Brown and Matt Jones are out there.' I was just cheering those guys on and learning, trying to get better every day in practice, just trying to do something to impress the coach to put me out there.

He made the most of it, rushing for 74 yards and a touchdown. He's pretty much been the Gators' No. 1 tailback since.

It has taken some time, maybe more than most, including Taylor, would have thought when he first arrived on the Florida campus last summer with a high school resume that was completely off the charts 12,121 rushing yards and 191 touchdowns at Belle Glade Glades Day.

Taylor ready to take charge at RB for Gators

Taylor said it was a tough adjustment, but he never got down on himself or his situation.

"We've got a lot of great running backs in there," Taylor said. "Me, Mack Brown, Mark (Herndon), Matt Jones, Adam Lane, all those guys, Brandon Powell, the freshman that just came in.

"All those guys will help us and we're just ready to have a great year and just feed off of each other, go out there and have fun, attack teams and have a great time while we're out there doing it."

"When I first came in last year I was fresh out of high school and wasn't really used to playing on the college level," Taylor said. "Here you have to practice really well, too.

Heading into his true sophomore season, Taylor now appears to be "The Guy" again at tailback, a role he'd held since way back in the eighth grade before slipping into a much different one at the start of last season.

A strong spring seems to have solidified his role as the starter at what has become a crowded tailback position.

Taylor improved his pass protection, gained a better grasp of the offense and was ready when the coaches called on him during a loss at LSU. He came off the bench and rushed for 56 yards on 10 carries, a performance that earned him his first start the following week against Missouri.
