Ted Turner doesn't mince words
Turner was 24 when he took over his father's billboard business which he had worked for in various capacities since he was 12. He brought the billboard company into the black and set his eyes on a UHF station in Atlanta. The purchase marked the beginning of the Turner Broadcasting System (TBS).
"All it was, was advertising," Turner said of the billboard business. "I wanted to make a contribution."
Turner also became heavily involved in political and philanthropic efforts, including pledging more than $1 billion to United Nations causes; working to reduce threats from nuclear weapons; and lobbying for clean energy actions.
Turner's advice: Work hard, but not too hard, where a breaking point is reached; economize and watch your expenses; do some good for others regardless of financial position; and speaking under his hat of running the 50 restaurant Ted's Montana Grill be good to the people you serve.
Turner, 71, was the featured guest at the "Entrepreneurs Unplugged" event put on by CU's law school and Silicon Flatirons Center, an interdisciplinary program focused on education on issues facing the telecom and information technology sectors. The event hosts entrepreneurs to share their stories with CU faculty, students and the general public.
"It's hard to imagine a more compelling story than Ted's," said Brad Bernthal, director of the center's Entrepreneurship Initiative and an associate clinical professor of law at CU. Bernthal served as a moderator for the event, asking questions of Turner.
Entrepreneurship and business development is not easy, he said.
On Friday, Turner shied away from recounting how he became a media magnate, using his words instead to speak out against the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq Vans Black Shoes For Men

"But nothing's easy," Turner said to the more than 200 people in attendance.

The media and business mogul shared his experience, advice and regrets in the business world, but he didn't shy away from taking some tangents to speak his Skechers Boat Shoes Womens

and to draw laughter with jabs about the former president, jokingly saying it would make more sense for the United States to attack Canada and picking on himself about not having the Braves anymore.
"I lost my baseball team," he said. "I mean, talk about losing."
Turner said later that his biggest regret wasn't that he sold his Turner Broadcasting Vans Old Skool Pro Red System business to Time Warner, but rather that he didn't block AOL on the much beleaguered merger.
