The general manager of General Electric's Global Product Management shared an industry perspective case study supporting the cause for new metrics. Almost a decade ago GE unveiled Reveal, an incandescent light bulb that was intended to produce a brighter light and vivid, deep colors.

The new metrics would be most ideal for lighting professionals as they would allow for more effective ways of communicating experiences with light, said Randy Burkett, an architectural lighting designer from St. Louis, Missouri. However he, like many others, emphasized that new metrics are not the "end all" to creating a better experience in a space, but are another "tool in the box" for doing so.
Briggs noted that additional metrics on the consumer side would only influence about 20 percent of the light market, being those who would be interested in gauging a light's value.
Technological advances in lighting prompts need for new ways to measure light's benefits
"The lumen and the color rendering index are the two major, if not only benefit measures that we have and so what does the conversation become? It becomes a talk of cost, price and energy," said Mark Rea, director of the LRC. "Can we not come up with additional metrics for the benefit of society and the environment?"
The two primary light measurements in wide use are the lumen, a measure of light produced by a source, and the color rendering index (CRI), which is used to gauge how faithfully a light reproduces the color perceived on an object in sunlight. Those two units are a very short list of gauges for measuring a light's benefits and, if not expanded, could serve to limit both the industry's and society's ability to take full advantage of the technological advances in recent years.
"If we are lighting our parking lots to a lumen we are missing the opportunity to design for a sense of security by providing brightness," said Rea. Simply increasing lumens for greater brightness will create a parking lot that appears brighter, but the same effect could be created Vans Purple through changing other variables that influence brightness, such as directing the light beams Mbt Mens Shoes Clearance Uk

a light system to deliver the [ideal] benefits then we can save 30 or 40 percent on energy because we are not wasting energy producing a benefit that is not applicable to what we are doing," Rea said.
TROY Can a measurement be placed on the amount of security a light can provide? The comfort derived from its presence? Or its ability to create the ideal atmosphere for reading? "Most people know that a CRI of 100 is an incandescent lamp and that's the benchmark," said Briggs, thus "most people" were under valuing the Reveal bulbs, which had a 78 or 79 CRI. Consumers were assuming the bulbs were an inferior product when, in fact, the were being compared on the wrong scale. The metric that was being used to gauged the bulb did not equate to the effect it was meant to produce. The company was eventually able to overcome that hurdle through marketing that contributed to a growing awareness of light quality.
The importance of establishing new metrics was underlined by keynote speaker Rory Sutherland, vice chairman of the UK communications firm Ogilvy Group.
"The most important way to change things is your ability to change paradigms, which also means the way you look at things, the way you define a system," said Sutherland. "I am highly convinced there is a revolution taking place and revolutions require new metrics."
There was less need for an expansion beyond the lumen and CRI prior to the early aughts, explained Rea. Before then, there were far fewer options for how a space could be lit; it has only been with the invent of solid state lighting such as LEDs and their near inexhaustible possibilities for customization they provide that the need has arisen.
"We, as a lighting industry, are very good at talking about the amount of energy to produce an amount of light and the costs of the products themselves," said moderator Russ Leslie, associate director of the Lighting Research Center. "We have not done a good job we would get a 'D' at best at articulating the benefits that we are getting from that lighting."
It was a flop when it first came onto the market.
at areas on the pavement that were more reflective.
The company was marketing the bulb as an improvement to a space's quality of light, but the trouble was that the light bulb had been designed to specifications outside the CRI, the industry standard for measuring quality of light.
